This past Saturday, June 21st, Hibernian Community Foundation held the Ron Gordon Football Festival: a day to celebrate all aspects of HCF and connect with the Football Club and supporters from all corners of our community.

Over 400 footballers, community members and volunteers were welcomed to Hibernian Training Centre over the course of the day: enjoying football, food and activities for all ages. The football kicked off at 12pm with HCF’s Community Club showcasing the stars of tomorrow with players as young as 7 getting their chance to turn out at Hibernian FC’s high-performance home.

Following multiple small sided tournaments for the juniors, it was time for the senior portion of the day to kick off, but not before a reminder from Hibernian FC Chairman, Ian Gordon, of the importance of the day.

“This day means a lot to my family, so thank you for coming out to support the Hibernian Community Foundation,” said Gordon before the kick-off.

“Community meant everything to my father, so it’s great to see so many of you here today celebrating our community.”

In the dug-out for the ten-team tournament was current Hibs stars Joe Newell, Jordan Smith, Rudi Molotnikov, Warren O’Hora, and Nicky and Chris Cadden; while Hibs legend John ‘Yogi’ Hughes also led a team. Hibernian FC Sporting Director Malky Mackay stepped in on the day for Darren McGregor.

“It’s [Ron Gordon Football Festival] very important and been successful in the memory of Ron Gordon,” Hibernian FC Head Coach David Gray told Sky Sports before the matches kicked off.

“There’s a great sense of community, we’re a real family club so it’s brilliant to have everyone involved.”

Captain and HCF board member Joe Newell was unable to oversee a victory for his team on the day, but that wasn’t going to stop him enjoying his first experience as a manager and raising awareness for HCF’s various initiatives.

“It’s been really good for our foundation. It build connection between the community and the team, it’s great for the fans to come down and get to know everyone. It was a new imitative to get the boys coaching, and it’s been great to see the fans jumping at the chance.”

HCF would like to thank The Hibernian Match Programme, whose contribution helped provide shirts for players on the day.

All funds raised will go towards the continuation and development of programmes that support HCF’s regular activities involving community meals, community football, events for the elderly and support for New Scots. Thank you to all those who participated and donated on the day. If you would like to make a donation to the foundation, you can do so here.

HCF would also like to thank Hibs’ supporters group Block 7, who turned out in numbers to volunteer with setting up, on-the-spot jobs, and cleaning up at the end of the day. Their commitment to HCF is welcome and their support is very much appreciated. Block 7 were also victorious on the day, taking out the trophy over their rivals. Congratulations to them and tall who played throughout the day!
