Song Bridge unites Ukraine and Scotland at Edinburgh Fringe

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, one of the city’s defining cultural attractions, became the setting for a powerful celebration of friendship and culture as young performers from Kharkiv shared the stage with Edinburgh-based Ukrainian and Scottish artists in a special performance titled Song Bridge.

The event brought together voices from Ukraine and Scotland, creating a unique cultural exchange that captivated the audience. The warmth and energy throughout the performance left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance.

Organiser Vitaliia Melnyk said the project was born from a desire to unite two cultures while celebrating their differences.

“I believe deeply in people and in the beauty and cultural heritage that every nation carries within it.

When I moved from Ukraine to Scotland, I discovered how different our two countries are, but also how much we have in common. Somewhere between those differences and similarities, the idea of Song Bridge was born, not to make our cultures the same, but to let their beautiful contrasts meet and discover what connects us.”

For Vitaliia, the visit of the young performers from Kharkiv held particular significance.

“Kharkiv is my city. It continues to live through the reality of constant attacks, and yet its people continue to create, sing, raise their children and carry their culture forward. Seeing young performers travel from Kharkiv to this beautiful, historic city of Edinburgh and bring their voices, energy and a piece of Ukraine with them was incredibly moving.”

She added that the performance became more than just a show.

“Kharkiv came to Edinburgh, and Edinburgh came out to meet Kharkiv. Ukrainian and Scottish performers stood together on one Fringe stage, and Song Bridge became more than a project, it became a real bridge between people, cultures and two countries.”

The project was supported by Hibernian Community Foundation, which has worked for several years to create a welcoming space for Ukrainians and New Scots in Edinburgh. Melnyk expressed her gratitude to the foundation, as well as to Eleanor and the Hibs Community Choir for their support.

Organisers also thanked every performer, partner and audience member who helped bring Song Bridge to life, describing the event as an unforgettable celebration of culture, community and connection between Ukraine and Scotland.
