The Hibernian Community Foundation Welcomes John ‘Yogi’ Hughes as an Ambassador

The Hibernian Community Foundation is incredibly excited to announce a new ambassador for the official charity of Hibernian FC: Hibs legend and Leith icon John ‘Yogi’ Hughes!

A friendly face known to many at Easter Road and throughout Edinburgh, HCF is delighted to be working closely with one of Leith’s favourite sons, and looks forward to developing the relationship in the coming months and years. 

Following recent discussions and meetings with newly appointed Managing Director John MacMillan MBE, Hughes was all too eager to join forces with HCF. 

“I’m a born and bred Leither, I know exactly what Hibernian means to people – and not just the football club,” said Hughes. 

“The Foundation represents a chance for community members to gather and share a meal, or engage in activities to help their health and wellbeing. I’m privileged to have the opportunity to represent the good work this team does.” 

Hughes was unveiled as HCF’s latest ambassador at a recent networking event, held in the Hibernian Community Hub on the day of the Ron Gordon Football Classic at Easter Road Stadium. At the session, partners and members of the Hibernian Community gathered to learn more about HCF, hearing from John MacMillan and Head of Community & Depute Director Katie Stewart.

“Yogi is such a recognisable figure around Leith and is tireless in his advocacy of the club and the community that can be built from it,” said John MacMillan on the day. 

“For someone so synonymous with this club and area, it was a no-brainer to ask him to come on board and help us to use the power and passion of football to change lives.” 

In his ambassadorial role Hughes will represent HCF at events across Edinburgh and Scotland, while also acting as a spokesperson for new developments. On the day of the announcement the former Hibs manager addressed attendees, describing the announcement as an “honour and a privilege”. 

“The Foundation’s aim to use the power of football to create opportunities for people to come together strongly aligns with how I’ve gone about my life,” said John Hughes. 

“I’m excited to get started and see how I can help.” 

Born and raised in Leith, Hughes joined Hibs in 1996 and spent four years with the club, helping return top-flight status to Easter Road in 1999. He returned to the club as Manager in 2009 helping achieve European status in his time. Today, he is a regular in hospitality as a matchday host.
