October’s SOS: Ger Freedman

Supporting Our Supporters, the mental health drop-in run by the Foundation, is pleased to announce a special forthcoming event. As well as providing a safe space for men to share issues and receive support, these monthly meetings have also invited keynote speakers, with John Hughes and Brian McDermott being welcomed previously. October’s SOS meeting will feature Ger Freedman.

Ger’s name might not be as familiar as a Hibs legend or the new Director of Football. However, Ger played a key role in steering our club through its darkest period. In 1990, Heart of Midlothian chairman, Wallace Mercer, made an audacious bid to become Hibs’ majority shareholder, bringing Hibs to the brink of extinction after 115 years. Lifelong Hibee, Ger was involved in Kenny McLean’s ‘Hands Off Hibs’ campaign that galvanised support amongst fans of both Hibs and Hearts, and indeed clubs across Scotland, to oppose this hostile takeover, a campaign that was ultimately successful. Ger will also share stories about Leith Athletic, the local junior club he is Honorary Chairman of, and who have brought Hibs stars including Leigh Griffiths and Darren McGregor through their ranks.

Held on the last Monday of each month, the SOS drop-ins are run by fans involved in the 12-week SAMH ‘The Changing Room’ sessions, past and present, but are open to all in the community in need of mental health support.
